I don’t know if this is the act of my phone listening to me 24/7, but in the last couple weeks, my endless feed of content has been all Overmono.

With a recent collaboration at LotRadio with everyone’s favorite artist, Fred Again, Overmono will soon be confused with the two white dudes from Disclosure. A couple months ago, while doing my version of Crate Diggin (endless scrolling on SoundCloud and Spotify playlists), I came across an album cover featuring this sinister-looking canine (canine: a word that got me out of the 3rd grade spelling bee). The song was none other than the transient synths and fast-passing drums of Good Lies. I instantly fell in love with this track and wanted more. Straight to Spotify, I realized they had just released an album. (case and point)

Overall Thoughts
I’ll be the first to say it; I didn’t get it on my first listen. I actually stopped through after the first half and didn’t think about it for a bit. I think that’s ok, though, to not like something right away. You have to let things breathe. As someone whose music taste is always growing and changing, it’s ok to not like something. I will say I am very glad I stuck with it, as I began to understand why this album is the way it is. From the slow, deep synth lines to the fast drum breaks, the album weirdly flows so well all the way through. It’s definitely one of those listens you have to be in the right headspace to get, but I’m sure I’ll be listening to some of these tracks for a long time. The second half really picks up and has these super fun, danceable, heavy synth songs that are just so fun. I am excited to see what they do next and hope they come to LA soon, so I bugged the mates about seeing them live.
(This unreleased song could change the game)
Favorite Tracks
Good Lies: Sharing the same name of the album I think Overmono also knows this record was a banger. It has become one of my favorite dance tracks of the year, and I play it every time I find myself needing a little hype. The way it builds all the way through makes it the perfect track to start a run or just get excited about something. The snares and high hats are so perfect and are such a standout from the rest of the album. It’s so good that the song is followed by an outro under the same title.
IS U: With its simple drums and vocals carrying through the song, this really lets the synths tell the story. The pads add so much ambience to the song, and I only wish I could hear it in a large room with gigantic speakers. It builds into this intense hodgepodge of just every sound coming at you at one time. I love it.
So U Kno: The driving kick and hi hat with this long intro keep my ears peaking the whole time. Running over 5 minutes, this song is just so simple in all the right ways. Then, just over a minute into this deep, barreling bass, the song drives the listener in. When it finally slows down, you really get to hear the pads and the bounce of the track, leaving you with this pause right before the anvil comes down one more time.
Rating(7.5/10)
While maybe this rating is a little high, I give credit where credit is due. I’ve been putting on this album more and more, and I still can’t get enough of it. I know it’s not for everyone, but that wasn’t the point. It’s so new, different, and really it isn’t that deep sometimes. I am really excited to see what they do next and look forward to continuing my deep dive into the world of Overmono.
